Cellcrypt was formed in 2005 to address the problem of voice security for enterprise and government customers. To do this, Cellcrypt has assembled a team of experts in security, encryption, and telecommunications technology from around the world, and has a strong technology advisory board
composed of world class IT security experts from across the industry.

The company is based in London and has an office in Washington DC.

In January 2007 Cellcrypt raised £1.6m in equity financing from Porton Capital.

The need for voice security

Mobile phone calls are vulnerable to eavesdropping and calls are often made without considering the impact on information security if someone listens in on a conversation. These risks are taken because it is often hard to operate without a mobile phone.

Recently there has been a great increase in the use of mobile devices for data as well as voice, with leading devices including Nokia’s smartphones, RIM’s Blackberry, and Windows PDAs. There are a number of products for these devices that address the risks to information security of mobile data. There has, however, been no comprehensive solution to eavesdropping on voice calls beyond the expensive proprietary handsets with hardware-based encryption, which lack the features and battery life of standard smarthphones, used in small numbers by government.

Cellcrypt solutions

Cellcrypt’s first product, Cellcrypt Communicator™, is a software application that encrypts voice calls end-to-end between two mobile phones. The encryption technology is strong and the protocol and algorithms are available for review, however the simplicity of installation and ease of use are as important. Because the software runs on standard smartphone devices – commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) platforms - users get a familiar device, to all the standard features of the device, including the address book and good battery life.

Cellcrypt Communicator is currently available for a range of Nokia Symbian smartphones, and future versions will run on Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices.

Future Cellcrypt products include a secure push voicemail product and integration with landline PBX products, which will provide a unified secure voice platform that is integrated with existing systems.

Cellcrypt’s products are ideally suited for wide deployment, combining ease of use with strong voice security on standard and familiar mobile devices.
